Practical Session: Dark Eyes and Lips

During this lesson with Fenella, we looked at creating dark eyes and lips for our second assessment of this unit. Fenella started with a demonstration of a classic smokey eye using four colours, a brown, black, grey and white shimmery shade. She finished with black gel winged eye liner and lashings of  mascara. She then moved on to the lined them with pencil and filled them in with a red/pink lipstick.

We then had to recreate one of the images we found of a make-up including a dark eye and dark lip.

I chose an image I found off instagram by a makeup artist called 'pinupbeauty'.

The class was unfortunately an odd number this day so I had to work on my own face. So I began by cleansing the skin and then applying my usual face base and then started by concentrating on the crease of the eye. I didn't have the right pink red colour that the make up artist has used in their look but I went for a darker purple colour (Kyrolan Shallot and Lavender) building this up until I was happy with the depth I had created in the socket. I then went onto add the gold shadow to the lid of the eye, blending ever so slightly into the purple layer of shadow I had put down in the crease. I then went onto smoke out the bottom lash line with the purples. I then applied a back Kohl pencil to the lower and upper water lines. I curled  my lashes and then applied lots of black mascara to both sets. I then moved on to the lips which I mixed red and blue (equal amounts) mad lip mix's and created purple which I applied to the lips. 

Quentin and his Mood Board

For my Quentin design, I imagine him to be sexy, cool, kind of a Marlon Brando looking type of guy. He also wears leather like Claudia, his hair is messy and dark. I imagine him to be in a transformed Vampire mode all the time so this is how I will design Quentin. As Quentin is a figure of Claudia's imagination he doesn't have a background apart from starting off as a imaginary best friend now her imaginary lover. 

I think teeth make vampires look scary and I want Quentin to be a soft type, loving character so I will not be including teeth in my design and images. I will be having the classic vampire veins that are featured in the series and red eyes. 

Claudia and her Mood Board

This is my mood board for Claudia, Claudia is a witch who was banished from her coven when she was younger because her mother was using dark magic, corrupted by a Vampire. Claudia grew up on her own with no brothers and sisters just her mother, therefore created things up in her mind. She doesn't really experience the outside world, she does though have a boyfriend. The only problem is her boyfriend, Quentin, is not real. She wants to bring him to live so badly she risks her life with doing magic again. So far every try has been unsuccessful, she is cursed by her coven, if she carries on she will die. Each time she practices magic a scar grows up her arm and if it reaches her heart she will end up dead. She wants him alive that badly she is willing to risk her own life. 

Going with the styling from The Vampire Diaries already, the evil characters (which I imagine Claudia would be) are dressed very grunge, sexy and normally in leather. I imagine her to wear dark make up with a smokey gold eye and dark brown/red lip. Her skin will be contoured and her blue eyes beaming. 

She will wear leather jackets, ripped tights and boots. She likes skulls and lacey items of clothing. She wears her hair curled and messy. 

PRESENTATION TIME

We were asked to create a 10 minute power point presentation discussing our ideas for our characters. We didn't need them fully developed as Kat was there to help us progress them further. 

As I had decided to use The Vampire Diaries as my series for developing my characters, I already knew a fair deal about the shows, characters and story lines past and present. I chose to use Claudia and Quentin as these two would fit in better than using an older lady character as the TV series is a teen supernatural drama. 

These are the slides from my presentation. I think I understood the presentation brief quite well and gathered most of my idea's in time to present. I feel like I did it calmly and spoke clearly enough for people to hear me. 

Claudia and Quentin and Mrs Laderman

After completing our Great Expectations portion of this unit we moved on to modern Gothic Horror. We were giving a brief of 3 characters and we were to pick 2. Claudia, Quentin or Miss Laderman. 

Character Profiles:

Claudia

Claudia is a girl in her twenties. As a child she was left alone to develop with little parental guidance and through her relationship with T.V. movies developed an unhealthy relationship with Horror films, believing this to be the way life really is.

 All the scenes take place in various parts of Claudia’s apartment, which is European in style with 

a great deal of kitsch décor. She is agoraphobic and is kept in touch with the outside world by her neighbours who provide her with her every day requirements.  She models herself on a variety of girls often twisting her look to suit whichever film she is watching at the time and there is often
a nod to the main character in the current film within her appearance.

 The script portrays her as psychotic and there is always the feeling that although her character is scripted/can be seen as humorous, danger is just around the corner.   However all this is normal to Claudia and she is of a cheerful disposition in this mad world of hers.

Quentin

Claudia has an imaginary boyfriend, Quentin, who is long suffering and a constant disappointment to her. They don’t live together but he visits regularly and they talk on the telephone if he can’t get in to see her. As he is part of her imagination his appearance changes to suit her mood. Sometimes he will be a David Beckham looking guy, whilst in another scene he will appear as a Pete Docherty type, Daniel Craig type or a Hollyoaks Babe. If she is having a bad day he will morph into an uncouth couch potato chav with all that brings with it.

 He is as into the horror film genre as she and into role-playing to suit her whims and moods.

Claudia has a paranoid suspicion that he is constantly having affairs behind her back and keeps him firmly under her thumb, sometimes restraining him or keeping him prisoner in one of the rooms.

Mrs Laderman

Claudia’s neighbour in her 40’s. She alternately changes into a variety alter egos and is Claudia’s friend and confidant. Living in the apartment opposite, she was Claudia’s only link to the outside world. Although they are friends there is suspicion that Mrs L’, has designs on Quentin. In fact she has designs on Claudia.

We then had to decide which TV series we could imagine our two characters on. They had to be in any one of the series and one of the seasons of that show.

I watch most of these series but I went with my favourite because I have often imagined working on the set of this show and would love to one day. I chose the Vampire Diaries. 

Practical Session: Creating light scaring, using molds, how to attach to the skin, how to colour

Products:

• Quick release (petrolease) or you could use Vaseline
• Pros-aid glue for sticking down mold pieces
• Pro clean
• Witch hazel for blending edges away
• Fixing Spray
• Disposables
• Wound filler
• Cream paints (supracolour)
• Ultra foundation palette

In this lesson with Sue we looked at creating molds, applying these and how to colour to look realistic. She started by making sure the area was clean. She then took the mold and cut off any edges that may have been to big to blend away. She then used pros-aid, being a contact adhesive you need to apply it to the piece and then onto the body. Waited for it to go clear and then pushed the mold piece onto the skin. She pushed down on the piece and began to blend away the edges with witch hazel and a cotton bud. Once she was happy she coloured it with foundation and then began to fill in the wound with blood and red cream paints. 

It was then our go to create our own wounds and apply moulded pieces.

Firstly I applied the piece with pros-aid and insured that it was stuck down firmly. I then began to blend away the edges with witch hazel. Once I was happy I then started to paint it.

This is the final outcome. I wasn't happy with the edges, they started to lift off when I applied the powder, I believe this is because I didn't put enough pros-aid on the wound and skin.

I'm happy with the colouring inside the wound but the colouring on the skin was too pink. I know how to fix this now.

Continuity: Creating Miss Havisham for a Second Time/ Evaluation

This was the assessment I was worried for. I had never done any make-up continuity before this assessment so I was worried I wasn't prepared enough for it. I really wanted to get it spot on the same and prove to myself I can pay attention to detail. I used all the same products as before, had my notes, face chart, hair chart and pictures from the first assessment on stand by ready to tackle continuity. 

Overall I was happy with how my final Images turned out. I feel like I did my design justice the second time around. I followed all of the same steps I originally took to create my first Miss Havisham look and I feel like this paid off. I'm very happy with how the continuity looked, but the only issue I found was time management. The second time was a bit trickier because I obviously was trying to get certain aspects spot on as before by following the pictures, I think this is how I lost some of my time. I still finished on time but I felt the scratches was a little more rushed than I wanted them to be. This time around I think the camera that I used was set up differently or the light was too bright because the pictures seem a little flash backed.  Normally I would look to my products for this to see if they SPF in them but I used the exact same products so I know this wasn't something to do with my artistry skills.

 Furthermore, If I could change one thing was trying to make a costume. I didn't manage to find any costuming that was within my budget in time. Next time I will take this in to consideration a lot earlier. I would also darken the veil even more, unfortunately the lights took away the darkness and dirtiness I created when I made the veil.
