Based off the novel titled 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' written in 1891 by Oscar Wilde, this film version tells a story of a young and naive Dorian Gray moving to London to move into a house he has just inherited. In London he meets Lord Henry Wotton and Basil Hallward, who paints a picture of Dorian to capture his youth. When Gray see's the final painting finished he wishes he could never grow old and continue to look as youthful as the painting. Dorian looks at the portrait of himself sometime after its completion and has noticed it has started to decay and his appearance on the portrait is showing to look horrid. He starts to act against this with sexual encounters,murder and mischief and it ends with Dorian's death.
There is key motifs in this story like sexual power, the supernatural and power and constraint. This was a very enjoyable film which starred Ben Barnes as Dorian Gray and Colin Firth as Lord Henry Wotton.
I watched this film to have a look at another Gothic story set in Victorian times to get ideas for costuming, make-up and hair styling when it came to creating my own characters of Miss Havisham and Estella. Overall this was a very enjoyable film with very good styling inspiration for me as well as a good storyline.
