Gothic Horror

Gothic Horror is a genre which mixes horror and romance. Horace Walpole is responsible for writing the first Gothic Horror novel called 'The Castle of Otranto' in 1764. Gothic Horror also have aspects of comedy and melodrama. Gothic Horror is started by setting the scene, explaining the creepy architecture. For example these are normally old mansions, stately homes and castles. Any place that you would think spooky going on's could happen, this is to create and build tension for the reader. The majority of Gothic Horror stories have these elements somewhere in the story, the supernatural, ghosts, haunted houses and Gothic architecture, castles, darkness, death, decay, troubles, madness, secrets and curses. Some Gothic horror stories have fairy tale features in them but tend to be a lot darker versions of these well know children stories.

Gothic Horror plays on the fear of the unknown. Gothic horror stories have a lot of repetition featured in them, these are known as motif's. These are the uncanny, the sublime, crisis, the supernatural vs the real life, strange places, power and constraint, a world of doubt and sexual power.

Here I've made a mind map of some films, TV shows and novels and main characters that are of the Gothic horror genre. 

I will continue to research characters, settings, motifs, elements of TV, films, and novels to expand my knowledge therefore making it easier to design and create my 'Miss Havisham' and 'Estella' characters.
