Gothic Horror Novels

Some of the most well known Gothic writers include Horace Walpole for creating the genre, Charles Dickens, Mary Shelley, Oscar Wilde, Bram Stoker and Ann Radcliffe.

Horace Walpole is said to have created this genre of storytelling with the novel called 'The Castle of Otranto' 1764. This story features an Italian Castle (a typical element of Gothic Horror) and is about a Lord and includes supernatural and a mistaken identity. Known as the first Gothic Horror novel, it is renown for murder mystery and of "Who did it?". 

Mary Shelley is best known for creating 'Frankenstein' (1818) at just 20 years old. The story is about a scientist called Victor Frankenstein who creates a monster in his laboratory. This story features different Gothic Horror motifs, themes and symbols such as passive women, 

monstrosity and sublime nature. The is a well known story and has been made into film adaptations so many times. 

Charles Dickens created one of the most famous Gothic Horror stories of all time, 'Great expectations'. (1860) This story is about an orphan who is given an opportunity to become a Gentlemen by an anonymous benefactor. Full or love, death and deceit this is the story that I will be focusing my project on by creating Estella and Miss Havisham. 

This is a story written by Oscar Wilde in 1891. It tells of a man who never ages due to making a supernatural deal to look like portrait of his younger self forever, therefore never ageing. This novel has themes such as sex and mystery. A very true meaning of Gothic Horror. 

Another author known for writing a well known novel in Bram Stoker, an Irish novelist. He is best known for writing the classic 'Dracula' in 1897. This tells a story of a Vampire, Count Dracula, moving to England from Transylvania to spread the Vampire curse and get new blood.
